Underdog Chippa United sends a warning signal, expressing their intent to disrupt the possibility of an Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns Nedbank Cup final.

The Chilli Boys have progressed to the semi-final stage of the cup competition and are determined to make it to the final.

What Occurred?

Advancing into the semi-finals with authority, the Eastern Cape team secured a commanding 2-0 win against TS Galaxy, thanks to goals from Eva Nga and a penalty converted by Roscoe Petersen.

Next up, they’re set for an enticing semi-final showdown against the reigning Nedbank Cup champions, Orlando Pirates. Co-coach Thabo September has emphasized their resolve to keep their aspirations alive for reaching the final.

What September Said?

“Sometimes it’s nice to be an underdog. We are going there to enjoy the moment while giving our best, as we’ve been doing lately,” coach Thabo September told KickOff.

“Come the 4th of May at 17:30, we will see if we will allow the dream to take place, or if we crush that dream. We play to win. Our job is to try win every match we play in. But the factors are not there yet – the factors can be the weather and a lot of things.

“If a chance avails itself, we will take it. We are looking to play our first cup final as Chippa United (coaches). Kwanele Kopo is a big factor in South African football, plus my experience in the game is also helping,” he continued.

“We didn’t change much when we got here, we maintained the continuity, and we put together a team that has strong belief.

“We brought self-confidence to the players. The team had a couple of clean sheets, so we spent most of our time working on the attackers,” he concluded.

The Greater Perspective

Chippa is set to welcome Pirates at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, banking on the advantage of playing on home turf to boost their chances.

Meanwhile, in the parallel semi-final match, Stellenbosch will host Mamelodi Sundowns in the Western Cape.

Moreover, the eagerly awaited final showdown is scheduled for June 1st at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.

What Lies Ahead for Chippa?

While Chippa United bask in the excitement of their Nedbank Cup journey, they must also remain steadfast in their Premier Soccer League campaign, with seven league matches left in the 2023/24 season.

Currently positioned 10th in the table, they are tantalizingly close to 8th place, securing qualification for next season’s MTN8 tournament by just a single point.

Their forthcoming league encounter against SuperSport United is scheduled for Saturday, April 20th
