PSL Top Player and Coach of the Month

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has revealed its top performers for April 2024, announcing the winners of the DStv Premiership Player of the Month and Coach of the Month awards.

Following a month filled with thrilling matches and remarkable individual performances, the league is acknowledging the footballer and coach who made the most significant impact.

On Wednesday, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced that Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena was awarded the Coach of the Month title, while Chippa United’s Sinoxolo Kwayiba earned the Player of the Month honor.

Sinoxolo Kwayiba wins Player of the Month

Kwayiba, the Chippa United striker, has been on a scoring streak, netting an impressive four goals in four consecutive matches. He has emerged as a formidable attacking force, scoring against Cape Town Spurs, Kaizer Chiefs, and SuperSport United—matches that Chippa ultimately won. Even in their 2-1 loss to AmaZulu FC, Kwayiba managed to score.

His outstanding performances have played a crucial role in Chippa United’s battle to avoid relegation. Since joining the club at the start of the 2023/24 season, Kwayiba has proven to be a valuable addition, demonstrating his ability to deliver under pressure and contribute to his team’s success.

PSL Statement On The Monthly Awards Winners

“The judging panel, made up of football commentators, analysts and journalists, were impressed by how he has adapted to an attacking position from defence since his arrival at the club from Pretoria Callies in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. His form in April saw the 25-year-old selected as the first player from Chippa united to win the monthly individual awards since the Gqeberha-based side was promoted to topflight football back in 2014,” read the PSL statement.

“Kwayiba emerged as the winner from a strong shortlist that also included lqraam Rayners of  Stellenbosch FC and the Orlando Pirates duo Tshegofatso Mabasa and Patrick Maswanganyi.”

Mokwena Wins Coach Of The Month

Mokwena, the Bafana Ba Style coach, has been named the DStv Premiership Coach of the Month for the second time this season, having previously won the award in August 2023.

The 37-year-old coach recently secured the DStv Premiership title with Sundowns, delivering a stunning 5-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium last Thursday.

In April, Sundowns had an impressive run, achieving victories against Richards Bay [1-0], Cape Town Spurs [1-0], Sekhukhune United [2-1], and TS Galaxy [3-0], while managing a 2-2 draw on the road against Moroka Swallows.

“Mokwena was praised for maintaining his side’s winning consistency and remarkable continued unbeaten run in the league during the period of fixtures while still locked to their commitments in the CAF Champions League,” added the PSL statement.

“Mokwena received the most votes ahead of Orlando Pirates coach Jose Rivieiro, Steve Barker of Stellenbosch FC and Chippa United co-coaches Kwanele Kopo and Thabo September, from
the panel of experts during the judging process.

“A Sekhukhune United player has won an individual monthly prize for the second month in succession as teenager Asekho Tiwani, beat the likes of Sedywn George and Tebogo Mokoena to the DStv Premiership Goal of the Month for April. His maiden goal in the league in his side’s 1-0 win over Cape Town Spurs impressed the judging panel the most.

“The left-back unleashed a spectacular strike from the halfway line that caught the Cape Town Spurs defence and goalkeeper off guard. For their recognition, all the winning coaches and players will each receive a trophy and R7,000 courtesy of league sponsors, DStv.”
