Sundowns Chasing New League Record After Clinching Title.

Freshly crowned DStv Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, are not taking a break after securing their seventh consecutive league title with six games remaining. Instead, they are setting their sights on a new league record.

The Brazilians crushed Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 on Thursday night at FNB Stadium, achieving a double over Amakhosi. This dominant victory echoed their 2-1 win in the first round.

Having played just 24 matches, Sundowns have already accumulated an impressive 62 points.

After the match, coach Rulani Mokwena shared their goal to break the club’s record of 71 points, which was set during the 2015/16 season under Pitso Mosimane.

Rulani Mokwena – ‘Why Not Go For It?’

“Man plan but God decides,” said Mokwena when asked whether they’d aim surpassing 71-point mark.

“This is where we are, football is about winning, losing or drawing. So, you enter the last couple of games with that. I’m happy to see that we’re playing more without the fear of not losing.

“We went through the period where our performances were based on not losing games and we had to remind players that we got so far because we were playing to win games.

“And I’m happy to see that there’s bit of a shift in the last four, five games, the mentality has shifted a little bit towards that direction.

“And the 71 points, why not? Why not go for it? It’s there, if you get it, kudos, if you don’t get it, unlucky and you try again next time. Why not go for the next target?

“Every mountain is there to be attempted to be climbed and the moment you climb one mountain, this is [for] the most successful people and what I always say about successful people, they look for another mountain to climb.

“So, why not go for 71 points and break it because last season we got to 70. So, it’s possible, why not?”
