Abha Suffers Heavy Defeat to Al Shabab, Dealt Blow in Relegation Battle

Pitso Mosimane’s Endeavor to avoid relegation suffers another setback as his team concedes crucial points on thursday.

What Occurred?

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane and Abha FC endured a significant setback in their bid to avoid relegation from the Saudi Pro League, suffering a resounding 5-0 defeat against Al-Shabab.

Entering the match buoyed by a recent victory over Al Fateh on April 7, Abha had hoped to maintain their momentum after a humiliating 8-0 loss to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr earlier in the month.

Both teams commenced the game with fervor, exchanging pressure in a bid to gain dominance. However, it was the home side that managed to break the deadlock just before halftime, with former Atletico Madrid midfielder Yannick Carrasco finding the net in stoppage time.

The Broader Context

Following the loss to the Riyadh-based team, Pitso Mosimane’s Abha FC remains in the 15th position in the Pro League standings, with only six matches remaining in the current campaign.

With the end of the season looming, each remaining fixture holds immense significance for Abha and Mosimane alike. The former Al Ahly coach has been entrusted with the crucial responsibility of steering the team clear of relegation from the Saudi top league. As such, every match becomes a pivotal opportunity to secure vital points and ensure their survival in the league.

Were You Aware?

Pitso Mosimane approached the match under challenging circumstances, having received news of his elder brother Daniel Khoza’s passing on Thursday, mere hours before the game.

In light of this tragedy, Mosimane is likely to be granted a brief respite to attend his brother’s funeral before returning for Abha’s crucial away encounter against Al Akhdoud the following Saturday.

What Lies Ahead for Mosimane & Abha?

Abha finds themselves teetering on the edge of the relegation zone, with their fate hinging on the performances of their competitors who are yet to play their 28th game. This precarious situation places Mosimane’s side at risk of slipping into the relegation spots.

Thus far, they’ve amassed 25 points in 28 games, with 11 points secured under Mosimane’s leadership. Abha’s upcoming challenge entails an away fixture against Al Akhdoud, currently in 16th place, scheduled for Saturday, April 27th.
